The flat and low dashboard was in the same lines of the ’90s Japanese car style. The front ones were simple, without a high bolstering. Inside, there was room for four adults on comfortable seats. In the back, an interesting solution was found for the rear spoiler, which was integrated over the trunk lid via two supporting struts. That is why the sleek front of the car was followed by a high greenhouse, sloped in the rear. The MX5 was designed as a 2+2 coupe, with enough room for the rear passengers. The Mazda MX6 and the Mazda 626 were the two and four-door versions of the same car, with the exception of some specific changes. It couldn’t compete against the BMW 3-Series, which was fitted with much more powerful engines. It was the answer given in Europe against the Opel Calibra and Honda Prelude. Japanese market ‘RS’ models feature the Recaro seats previously seen on the 35th Anniversary edition, but it’s unknown whether these will be available on UK models. As well as updated tech, the interior will also be available in a new tan-coloured trim, with lower-spec models featuring new fabric trim, too. This is still controlled via a click-wheel mounted on the centre console and will better integrate the latest versions of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The interior features a new 8.8-inch infotainment screen running Mazda’s latest MZD-Connect user interface. The electric power steering has been tweaked to improve responsiveness, and will be fitted to all powertrain variants including the smaller 1.5-litre engined cars and the 2-litre models with the optional automatic transmission. On the manual transmission versions Mazda’s also fitted a new ‘asymmetrical’ limited-slip differential, with top-spec models also picking up a new track mode for the ESP system. The high-specification 178bhp 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine doesn’t have any more power than the existing model, but does feature improved throttle response and a more emotional soundtrack driven directly from the engine, rather than a modified exhaust. Preceding a total overhaul of the iconic model due in a few years time, this 2024 update still includes lots of exciting changes, including updated tech, overhauled engines and some subtle styling tweaks. When Should You Not Use a Muzzle? Unfortunately, some states or provinces have breed specific legislation (BSL), which requires certain so-called “dangerous breeds” to wear a muzzle when not on private property. When required due to breed-specific legislation However, if you’re still training your dog to get used to grooming, a muzzle may helpful, especially when the dog is not familiar with the groomer. When properly desensitized with handling exercises (it helps to start in puppyhood), most dogs will tolerate or even enjoy grooming procedures like bathing or nail trimming. But that’s also a sign that behavior modification is in order for a long-term resolution. When you’re worried your dog may bite, the temporary use of a muzzle should be considered. There may be specific situations that upset or stress your dog, such as examinations at the veterinarian. There is a risk of biting due to a threatening situation The muzzle is simply a temporary tool to help you achieve that goal. Your goal should be to change your dog’s behavior and mindset. However, the muzzle doesn’t solve the problem, it simply helps keeps everybody safe while you work on behavior modification with an animal behaviorist, veterinarian, and/or dog trainer. Even if your dog has no bite history, if you think the risk of a dog bite exists-for example, your dog lunges and barks at other dogs or people-a muzzle can provide additional peace of mind. If your dog is aggressive and/or has bitten another dog or a person in the past, a muzzle can be used for safety. There is a history of biting, or a risk of biting Using a muzzle will keep you and anyone assisting you safe from your dog’s uncharacteristic but understandable behavior. Particularly if you need to move or treat the dog in some way. During an emergencyĪs mentioned before, an injured or frightened dog is much more likely to bite. Here are some situations that make the use of a dog muzzle safe and appropriate. When Is it Appropriate to Use a Dog Muzzle? Every dog should learn to love wearing a muzzle so if the day comes when they need to wear one, you and your dog won’t be stressed even further. You also need to teach and train your dog how to tolerate and accept wearing a muzzle. Therefore, even if you never have to rely on a dog muzzle, it’s a good idea to understand why, when, and how you should use a muzzle on your dog. And there’s no way to predict when such a situation might arise. While in severe pain, dogs can bite when you try to transport them or treat their wounds. It might be for the safety of the dog, the safety of a person, or both.įor example, if your dog is seriously injured, the risk of a dog bite jumps significantly. But most canine experts agree that at one point or another in every dog’s lifetime, there may be a situation when an owner needs to use a muzzle. After all, they have an unfair association with “aggressive” dogs or “attack” dogs. Why Are Dog Muzzles So Polarizing?ĭog muzzles can look controversial. Learn about the when, why, and how of using a dog muzzle, and always consult a professional dog trainer for advice on your dog’s individual situation. How do you know when a dog muzzle is helpful? What type of dog muzzle is the correct choice for your dog? There are so many questions around this emotionally charged topic. Is a dog muzzle painful or cruel? Perhaps you feel a muzzle is the best option for your dog’s situation, but how do you decide? There are certain situations where a muzzle can be very useful, and at times dog muzzles are even necessary, but there are other scenarios when a dog muzzle is definitely the wrong choice. You might wonder if your pet can drink, pant, or even breathe while wearing a dog muzzle. The idea of putting a muzzle on your dog can be unsettling. Making small, incremental adjustments is crucial to avoid overshooting the alignment. Make Gradual Adjustments: If your car remains misaligned, gently move forward to readjust the angle and attempt to park again.Turn the steering wheel as needed, making slight adjustments to keep your car parallel to the curb. Reverse with Caution: While reversing slowly, ensure you’re frequently checking your mirrors and blind spots for any incoming traffic or pedestrians. This provides a clean slate to attempt parking again. Start Over: If you notice that your vehicle is misaligned, stay calm, pull out of the parking space, and realign your vehicle to be parallel to the car in front. Misalignment occurs when your car is not parallel to the curb or is too far from it. Regular practice in different parking spaces and environments will help you become more comfortable when parking and ensure you stay relaxed in critical situations. To master parallel parking you must turn it into a habit. Addressing the Parallel Parking Challenges If you are parked on a hill or sloping driveway, you want to turn your wheels in a direction that prevents you from moving into the traffic path. Start by straightening the wheels, and if you need, gently creep forward by driving forward or by reversing. Show me a spot and I’ll parallel in.At last, you should straighten up your position. Fifteen years of driving a minivan in Toronto forced me to perfect the art of backing into tight squeezes. I suffered the parallel parking gauntlet back in 1982 and have become a virtuoso. The main objection to taking parallel parking off driver’s tests come from those who had to endure the experience of mastering it. The 2019 BMW 230i’s parking assist pilots the Bimmer into the spot while allowing the driver to handle the accelerator and brakes. The 2019 Ford Escape’s self-parking system, for instance, identifies the best parallel parking space and steers the car. Many vehicles come with self-parking technology. Semi-autonomous technology is making this “superfluous skill” obsolete. If you do have a parallel parking issue, if you can’t fit, drive around the block.” Republican congresswoman Sarah Lightner, who, in July, 2019, introduced a bill to get rid of it, said she did so after receiving many complaints from hopefuls who had paid their $50 exam fee, but failed because of what they considered a “superfluous skill.” She told WZZM-TV, “It’s a money game. Michigan is the latest jurisdiction to consider dropping it as a requirement to obtain a driver’s licence. Essentially, driving experts in these states acknowledge that while parallel parking is difficult, it’s also irrelevant. At the time, the argument for getting rid of it was that parallel parking was not “a big killer.” Today, parallel parking is not required as part of driver’s tests in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia and Wyoming. Back in 1990, Florida was the first state to drop parallel parking from its test. In America, parallel parking is no longer required in many states. Making the ability to parallel park the do-or-die manoeuvre for the driver’s exam is like making it mandatory for high-school students to dance the foxtrot in order to win their diplomas. Those who don’t want to try a parallel park can simply circle the block until a space they can nose into opens up. In Canada today, at least outside the major cities, there is plenty of space. Canadian driver’s exams were originally modelled on those from Britain and Europe, where parking space was (and continues to be) at a premium. Which poses the question: Why is parallel parking part of every province’s driver’s test? Is it nostalgia? Is it a throwback to our time as a colony? That is, after all, why parallel parking was put in the test in the first place. Of course, if they succeed, many of them will never parallel park again. A learner can successfully do every other aspect of the driver’s exam – right and left turns, navigate controlled and uncontrolled intersections, starting and stopping, lane changes, traffic lights, varied speeds, proper following distances – but if they fail to parallel park properly, they’ll fail. There are two words that strike terror in the hearts of those hoping to earn a driver’s license: parallel park. But she says there is a step people can take to protect themselves. Prior research has shown that among older people at higher risk, the flu virus can increase the risk of a heart attack in the months after an infection in the same way it's been shown with COVID. Even though new variants may be less virulent and most people have some immunity, a severe COVID infection can take its toll, just as the flu can. In particular, we know that COVID-19 virus really mounts a very exuberant inflammatory response.ĪUBREY: She says, among some of her patients, COVID can still be risky. Emily Lau, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.ĮMILY LAU: At the fundamental level, the real relationship between COVID-19 infection and cardiovascular disease risk is inflammation. Physicians say it can depend on the health of the patient and their preexisting conditions. And now that most of the population has some immunity from a combination of infection and vaccinations, the question is whether a COVID infection could still have such an effect on the cardiovascular system. Now, all of the people in the study died in the first year of the pandemic, in 2020 or 2021. He says the findings are significant and can help explain why people who have a buildup of fatty plaque in their blood vessels, which puts them at risk of heart attacks and strokes, may have increased risk after a severe COVID infection.ĬHARIS ANTONIADES: This is pretty important because if the plaque get inflamed because of the virus, then they get vulnerable.ĪUBREY: Vulnerable because the inflammation could cause the plaque to rupture or break off, which could lead to a heart attack or stroke. Charis Antoniades is chair of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Oxford. And the cells were less able to clear up the virus.ĪUBREY: Meaning the virus may persist in these cells. Chiara Giannarelli, a cardiologist at NYU.ĬHIARA GIANNARELLI: We were able to see that the virus is able to infect the vasculature in the heart that supplies the blood to the heart. They found direct evidence that the virus had infected cells in the blood vessels, specifically in plaque cells. Researchers at NYU analyzed the arteries of men and women who had died of severe COVID, all of whom had preexisting heart trouble. VA data is pretty robust.ĪUBREY: The question has been, why? A study published in the journal Nature Cardiovascular Research offers some clues. LESLIE COOPER: There are a number of data sets that show that cardiovascular complications, stroke and thromboembolism - meaning blood clots - are more common. Leslie Cooper, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Florida, says several studies, including a VA study with more than 100,000 people, have pointed to a higher risk of heart attacks and more. NPR's Allison Aubrey reports.ĪLLISON AUBREY, BYLINE: Doctors first noticed the connection between COVID and cardiovascular problems early in the pandemic, especially among people with preexisting conditions. That could explain why some COVID patients may be at risk of heart attack or stroke in the months after their infection. A new study tells us that the virus that causes COVID can infect plaque cells in the arteries. And if you happen to be there when the nearby train passes through, you'll enjoy $1 off your pint.
